Thumbnail Filmstrip of Andropogon gerardii - Big Bluestem Images
The most prevalent of all the prairie grasses, Big Bluestem once covered thousands of miles from the Atlantic Ocean to the Rocky Mountains. Thriving on a tremendous range of soils, in late summer Andropogon gerardii produces distinctive three-parted seed heads which resemble a turkey's foot. The lush green of the leaves and stems changes with the first frost to an attractive reddish-copper colour that provides landscape interest well into winter. For a solid stand of Big Bluestem plant at a rate of 5 KG per acre.
