Thumbnail Filmstrip of Vernonia fasciculata - Ironweed Images
Ironweed produces bright purple-crimson flowers that are very attractive to butterflies. Named for its tough fibrous stem, Vernonia fasciculata grows in almost any moist to medium soil. Excellent for naturalizing projects Ironweed is also a good tall plant for adding colour to the back of the border. It is a host plant for the American Painted Lady butterfly and is also beneficial to native bees.
